> OF THE DAYS GONE BY--- > The history of Karachi has been tumultuous to say the least. It started centuries ago when Arab invaders and subsequently those from great Britain, central Asia as well as the Arghoons and Thrkhans occupied the region, depriving the indigenous people of their land. > Gul Hassan Kalmati,a sindhi folklore writer has written a book on the subject titled’ KARACHI SINDH JEE MARVI”, published by Kacho Publications. The book comprising 640 pages and is priced at Rs 800. The book focuses on the plight of the residents belonging to isolated villages. > The author claims that Karachi is being remodeled to please the vested interests, thus forcing the locals to migrate from the city. Kalmati has based this claim on the research that he did for the book, He visited old parts of the cities along with villages and meet with the locals. > Three are many authors both local and otherwise, who have written their memories to depict the culture, traditions and lifestyle of the indigenous people of the city. Similarly, the British invaders, who ruled the subcontinent documented their memories, revealing how they dealt with the indigenous people and promoted vested interests. In fact, this is still being discussed by local historians. > The fact is that after partition, old Karachi was considerably ransacked which seems to have been forgotten by historians. The author has talked about way the rulers of the time treated the local people and how they renamed the streets of the city. > Kalmati, who as born in Arzi Village,Gadap Town, has relatives scattered all over the city from Kalmati has also given some of the original names of the areas in the book. The renaming, he Malir to Mauripur, from Golimar to Ghaghar Phattak, Layri and Garden. He has witnessed the difference made by ruling forces and has tried to put the record straight by writing articiles for both sindhi and Urdu news papers and periodicals. > Kalmati has also given some of the original names of the areas in the book. The renaming, he writes, happened on political grounds. The author, instead of challenging the facts, has just depicted both sides and has left it to the readers to form an opinion, moreover, he has written about the cultural activities of the past, the fast disappearing green belts of the city and the garden of roses. > The author explains the reason behind the title of the book. The name “Marvi” has been taken from the famous sindhi folk tale/love story Umar-Marvi, the latter being the woman, who rejected all marriage proposals to preserve the honor of her family. Sadly, she was kidnapped by a ruler of the time popularly known has Umar Soomro, king of the Soomra dynasty that ruled sindh for more than 500 years. Umar held Marvi captive at Umar Kot and offer her expensive items to get her consent for the wedding but she rejected his proposal. The people of Sindh still celebrate the annual day. > According to the author, present-day Karachi has turned into Marvi, as it is being held hostage by those with power. It is only the city’s traditional parents (the indigenous people) who are fighting for its survival. > By Jan Khaskheli > Daily The News Karachi > Wednesday,Marach,12,2008
